Forged Legal Big Game Broadhead
Finally, I have
a few of the first legal primitive big game broadheads for field testing.
These points are 2 5/8 inches long overall length. They are 1 1/16 inch wide
and legal in all states. The original was forged from a file. I've added
shoulders so the arrow rests on three points to better absorb shock on
impact with hard objects. (I'm not sure these are necessary. Let me know
what you think. It would be easier, and more authentic, to cast them without
the shoulders.) These broadheads are cast in our dendritic D2 knife blade
steel, tempered to Rockwell 57 then hand-ground and stone sharpened. Then
they are acid etched to expose the carbide dendrite micro serrations. Each
broadhead weighs 190 grains. These can be sharpened on a stone, but a
diamond sharpener is faster in the field.

NOTE-The #5, and #6 ferroulithic points are NOT LEGAL for big game;
but, #7 and #8 are legal in
all states, as far as I know.

Stone Legal Big Game
Broadhead
This is a LEGAL dendritic D2
knife steel big game broadhead, that was cast from an actual knapped stone
point I commissioned. It is 2 3/4 inches long, 1 1/16 inches wide, and the
tang is 5/16 wide. It weighs 260 grains. Sorry, that's the lightest I can
get them at this time. I hand sharpen the serrated edges with a diamond drum
to maintain the jagged edge. These points do not penetrate like a modern
broadhead, but they work just like the original stone points did. The
serrated edge creates massive tissue damage, and since the back 45 degree
bevel is sharpened, they cut on the way in and on the way out to leave a
blood trail. These are an experiment. They may be too heavy. They may be too
hard to sharpen in the field (I recommend a rat-tail diamond hone) but they
are made of the finest knife steel, tempered to Rockwell 58, and they look
like stone. I blue them with Birchwood Casey's paste blue after sharpening.
Use it to touch them up after hunting if you want them to stay black.
